Background

Emerging markets are economies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe that have had rapid economic growth and industrialisation. The rise of emerging markets challenged the existing economic order; on the other hand, these economies were also affected by the 2008 financial crisis, such that their future became uncertain and of interest to academics. On 5 December 2011, Beijing Normal University (BNU) founded Emerging Markets Institute (EMI), jointly with Emerging Markets Forum (Washington DC, US), to specialise in research and teaching on emerging markets. Professor Hu Biliang has been serving as the first dean of the Institute.
